What kind of program is gwabbit and what does gwabbit do?

gwabbit is an Add-In, sometimes called a Plug-In, created for Microsoft Outlook. An Add-In is a program that adds a new function to another program.

gwabbit saves you a lot of time when you add Contacts in Microsoft Outlook®.  You can add a Contact in one click, without having to tediously copy and paste each piece of Contact information.

Can't Outlook do this already?

No.

What versions of Outlook and Windows does gwabbit work with?

Microsoft Outlook 2010 (32-bit and 64-bit), 2007, and 2003

Microsoft Windows 7, Vista, and XP

What is gwabbit®  for BlackBerry?

gwabbit for BlackBerry is being phased out and is no longer available for download, but will be supported through the end of 2013. gwabbit is working to provide mobile applications for iOS and Android.

Is gwabbit compatible with iCloud?

No, gwabbit is not yet compatible with iCloud.  If gwabbit is not picking up your contacts, go to gwabbit Options > Advanced, and in the middle of the window, check "save my contatcs to this folder". If it is set to iCloud, you will need to either select the "use default", or another standard Outlook contact folder.

What does gwabbit do? Step by step

  1. When you open Microsoft Outlook, gwabbit is ready to go. There is no need to open the gwabbit program separately. A gwabbit toolbar (or tab for later versions) appears in Outlook:

  2. You check your email in Microsoft Outlook, just as you always do.

  3. gwabbit automatically scans the emails you receive as they come in. gwabbit looks for specific contact information the sender has included, including the person's name, job title, company, address, and phone and fax numbers.

  4. gwabbit checks if you have the contact already. If you do, it checks whether there is new or updated information in this email.

  5. If gwabbit detects a new contact or updated information:
gwabbit "pops up" a dialogue box.

    6. Click the dialogue box, gwabbit opens a contact window and puts each piece of information in the correct field. If it looks good to you, click "Save" to create the contact or to keep the information.

When will gwabbit gwab contact information?

Contacts will be recognized on new or unread messages when your Outlook reading pane is open or the email itself is opened.

But people end their emails in all sorts of ways, how does gwabbit do it?

gwabbit uses sophisticated algorithms (hard math) to identify what belongs in the contact. gwabbit is smarter than the average bear… or rabbit.

Does gwabbit work for emails in languages other than English?

Yes, although less reliably. Expect gwabbit to find many signature blocks in non-English emails. gwabbit's Klingon, however, is terrible.

What if I want to gwab a contact from the email thread, from someone other than the sender?

Easy! Just highlight the signature block anywhere in the email and click "gwabbit"!

Can I control the prompt to gwab a new contact?

You can regulate the prompt by going to the Options button on the gwabbit toolbar.  In the "General" tab, you will find options for control of the frequency of pop-ups associated with gwabbit contacts from your emails.

What is this "pending gwabs" button on my gwabbit toolbar?

When gwabbit detects a new or updated signature block from an email you access, if you don't gwab it immediately, the contact is placed in the gwabbit "pending gwabs" inbox. When you gwab the contact, it is removed from the list. If you choose to suppress the gwabbit alert in your Options, even though you won't get the alert pop-up, gwabbit still places the contacts in this inbox. You can then go to that inbox at any time to capture the contact using gwabbit. Note that this list is dynamic per Outlook session. It will be cleared when Outlook is closed, and a new inbox will start the next time you open Outlook.

The gwabbit "pending gwabs" inbox is a convenient, easy place for handling the gwabbed contacts. From here you can choose to gwab, delete or ignore the contact. If you choose "ignore", that email address is placed in your ignore list so that gwabbit will not attempt to capture that contact again. The ignore list is in the gwabbit Options Advanced tab. Here you can also manually add an email address or domain for gwabbit to ignore. It's easy to add and remove items from this list as needed.

Why isn't the "Display as" field filled in by gwabbit when I save a contact?

The "Display as" field is not populated by gwabbit, but is populated by Outlook as a default, based on the information entered in the contact name fields when the contact is created. So you will not see it populate when the contact is created, but it should be populated when you go back to the contact later.

gwabbit didn't pop-up?

No problem. Simply highlight the signature block and click "gwabbit"!

I don’t see gwabbit after installing the product?

If you don't see the gwabbit toolbar or tab after installation, first, please try rebooting your PC. Sometimes Outlook continues to run in the background even though it appears to be closed. By rebooting your computer, this assures that the application is fully closed and the gwabbit software can install properly. Once you restart Outlook, the toolbar should appear.

If after a restart of your PC the gwabbit toolbar does not appear, it may be disabled. Sometimes Microsoft Outlook add-ins will be in a disabled state when Outlook starts due to variables in individual PC environments. To get the toolbar to appear, please follow these steps:

In Outlook, Go to Tools > Customize > Toolbars
• Look to see if gwabbit is there and if so make sure it is checked.

If you do not see gwabbit there, the next step is to determine if it disabled as an Add-in.

For Outlook 2007:
• Go to Tools > Trust Center > Add-Ins.
• Look to see if gwabbit is listed as an Active Application Add-in.
• If it is listed as inactive or disabled, press the "Go" button at the bottom of the screen next to "Manage" Com Add-Ins.
• Click on gwabbit and OK to re-enable it.

If you are still not seeing the toolbar:
• Click on Outlook Help > Disabled Items
• Find and highlight gwabbit
• Click Enable, Save changes
• If the toolbar is not visible immediately, restart Outlook

If the toolbar is still not appearing, gwabbit may not be installed. You can check this by going to your Control Panel (Start>Settings>Control Panel) and clicking on "Add or Remove Programs". If gwabbit is not in the list of programs, please go to the Installation/Unistall section of the FAQ section.
